Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader A
itzaz Ahsan Saturday said he was confident that a positive conclusion will be reached on the issue of joint candidate of the opposition parties for the
presidential election. “Before the
presidential election, a positive conclusion will be reached,” the PPP candidate for the
president’s slot told media at a press conference alongside Balochistan National Party (Mengal)
chief Akhtar Mengal, who met A
itzaz Ahsan to discuss the
presidential election scheduled for September 4.
A
itzaz said that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)
chief Fazlur Rehman, who has been fielded by the grand alliance of opposition parties minus PPP, is a ‘well-respected’ man. “We have not raised any questions on his character,” he said. “We will try to persuade Fazl to withdraw from the race for the office of the country’
;s president in our favour,” he added.
Mengal said that a final decision on supporting a
presidential candidate will be taken after the party’s executive committee meeting. “We have talked to th
e Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal as well, and we believe in our institutions. We have told A
itzaz we will discuss the request in the party meeting we have already summoned,” Mengal said. “We expect from the
presidency that the gap between the federation and provinces will be narrowed down,” the BNP
chief said.
“We are thankful to Mengal sahab for giving us time,” A
itzaz said. “We have stated our stance on the
presidential campaign and we expect positive results. We also discussed CPEC, missing persons, development projects and the resources of Balochistan in great detail,” he said, adding, “We agree with the BNP-M stance as they represent the people of Balochistan.”
